The Impact of Different Types of Home Damage | SERVPRO of Allen

11/17/2023 (Permalink)

residentail home with roof destroyed and debris falling down If you discover damage in your residence, call SERVPRO of Allen right away.

Disasters and unexpected situations can happen at any point. Severe weather, house fires or broken windows from a fly ball that flew a little too high while your children were playing can all leave your home damaged without much warning.

Even though we know that we cannot prevent every situation from occurring, we can take steps to be prepared for as much as we can.

Understanding the different types of home damage and what to expect can help you prepare more thoroughly. If you do suffer damage, SERVPRO® of Allen can handle every aspect of your recovery.

The Biggest Risks in the Allen Area

In our particular area, we are at risk of heavy rain, flash flooding and tornadoes. We can also be at risk of suffering from wildfire damage if a season gets particularly dry and the conditions become volatile. Of course, the general risk for water damage, roof damage or fire is always present.

Water damage can happen due to rain or flooding, but it can also happen in an instant if your dishwasher malfunctions and leaks or a pipe in your wall bursts and leaks everywhere. Fire can also start in a variety of ways, but they most commonly start due to human error or negligence.

What Are Compounding Damages?

Suffering through one disaster situation is often stressful enough, but that single situation can lead to further issues, called compounding damages. For example, a flood will leave your home soaked and damaged, but that lingering water can also lead to structural issues or even mold growth.

A house fire will certainly damage the walls and floors where the flames were present, but the soot and smoke can travel to parts of your home that the fire never reached. When the fire is extinguished, water damage and chemical residue will all need to be addressed as well.

No matter how your home was damaged, a proper recovery is required so you can avoid lingering issues or further damage. SERVPRO is well-equipped to handle your recovery process from start to finish. We are trained in water, storm and fire damage repair as well as mold remediation and home remodeling.

If your home suffers water damage from a storm or a household accident, we will get to work drying out the excess moisture and tackle any repairs quickly. We will also make sure any lingering odors are taken care of and your entire space is sanitized.

If your home suffers a fire disaster, we will get right to work removing burned debris and cleaning out any soot and smoke damage. We will go room to room to make sure every bit of lingering damage is repaired. We can handle the smallest repairs all the way up to entire reconstructions of levels or sections of your home.

We are a full-service restoration company, so we come with everything we need to tackle your project from start to finish. Our team is trained in the latest restoration techniques, and we have years of experience helping homeowners like you overcome home damage challenges.

Does your home need restoration and you don’t want to make more than one call? Contact us to get everything handled by one team.

Why an Emergency Plan Matters for Your Business | SERVPRO of Allen

11/17/2023 (Permalink)

clip board with a disaster preparedness checklist and emergency supplies in the background Are you prepared for disaster? SERVPRO of Allen is here for you when disaster strikes!

It should be no surprise that the number of natural disasters has steadily been increasing over the last five years. All of the hurricanes, fires and floods in the news can be overwhelming at times.

Natural disasters can happen without much warning, leaving you with serious damage and a lot of uncertainty about the future of your business. By planning ahead, you can reduce your risk of extensive damage and weather through the disaster more smoothly.

Taking the time to create a reliable emergency plan can help you respond faster during a true emergency.

Why a Plan Is Important

Since natural disasters are happening more frequently and are becoming stronger, the possibility of suffering through one yourself is increased. Taking action against the possibility of dangerous fires, floods and storms can help you and your staff stay safe.

Disaster situations can cause extensive damage to your business, but they can also cause a trickledown effect on your staff. Lost wages, reduced revenue and the uncertainty of what comes next is something no business owner should have to deal with.

If you have a plan in place to recover, you can ensure your staff that you will be back open for business in no time at all. We don’t want you to have to shut your doors forever, so we are here to help.

The Creation of an Emergency Ready Plan

SERVPRO® has the perfect solution for helping your business prepare for disaster situations. Our Emergency Ready Plan service helps outline the various threats to your business and gives you step-by-step directions on how to respond to them.

Different businesses have different levels of risk depending on the service or product they offer. For example, a small storefront that sells local goods will have a different plan than a huge warehouse that works with dangerous chemicals on a daily basis.

We will go through each scenario and explain what to do before, during and after a particular disaster. This may include keeping important documents in an easily accessible area or having emergency bags ready for your staff to grab quickly on your way out the door.

Staying in communication with one another during emergencies is also crucial, so we will create a section in your Emergency Ready Plan that explains the chain of command and who is responsible for what. Having specific people designated to call 911 or to grab your fire extinguisher helps keep everyone calm and in control.

The Emergency Ready Plan is everything you need and more when it comes to disaster situations. We will ensure you have the information you need to respond smoothly to any emergency situation that comes your way.

Tips for a Safe Holiday Season in the Kitchen | SERVPRO of Allen

11/17/2023 (Permalink)

pan on kitchen counter in residence ablaze while unattended Fire damage in your home? Not for long with SERVPRO of Allen on the case!

We don’t know about you, but we love this time of year and all of the delicious food that our friends and family bring to holiday gatherings. We would bet you have a family recipe that has been passed down for generations that you have also perfected over the years.

While you dust off your aprons and get ready to make your delicious seasonal food, you also need to take precautions when it comes to reducing your risk of starting a house fire. Kitchen fires are more common at this time of year, so incorporate these tips below to help you stay and fire-free.

Addressing Your Kitchen Space

A cluttered kitchen can be a dangerous one, so the first thing you should do is prepare your space. Many kitchen fires start due to an accident or some type of flammable material getting too close and catching on fire.

Removing flammable materials like pot holders, wooden utensils, kitchen towels and holiday decorations can help reduce this risk.

You should also dress for the part! Flammable or loose clothing can easily catch fire and lead to serious or even deadly consequences. Tie up your aprons tightly and roll up your sleeves before you get to work.

Watch for Signs of Fire

It doesn’t matter how often you make a certain recipe or how many times you have cooked in your kitchen, the risk of fire is always there. Grilling, frying, boiling and baking all come with a certain level of risk, so stay close by whenever you have something on the stove or in the oven.

A single spark or popped grease bubble can quickly lead to disaster if you aren’t there to catch it right away.

If your family partakes in the holiday tradition of deep-frying a turkey, choose someone that will be in charge of the entire process that will be responsible and safe. Find a flat, non-flammable surface to set the fryer on and only fill it with the amount of oil that is recommended.

Be sure to take your turkey out of the freezer in enough time for it to thaw completely, as a partially frozen turkey can lead to an unpredictable reaction with the oil.

Check on Your Smoke Alarms

We all know that routine battery testing is important when it comes to your smoke alarms, but you should make it a point to check them before your holiday festivities get started. Test every alarm in your home, not just the ones near your kitchen, and replace batteries as needed.

You should also consider investing in a fire extinguisher that is designated just for your kitchen space. Put it in an easily accessible area and regularly check the expiration date on it to make sure it is in good working condition.

We wish you and yours a safe and relaxing holiday season, but remember that we are always here if a kitchen accident goes awry and leads to fire damage. We will work hard to help you recover faster so you can enjoy the rest of the season ahead.

Preparing for Chilly Texas Weather | SERVPRO of Allen

11/17/2023 (Permalink)

snowy highway with vehicles driving in a squall The winter season is almost upon us! SERVPRO of Allen has your back with these helpful tips.

The winter season is a tricky one in our community—there’s no denying that. Depending on the time of year, we could see heavy rain, freezing temperatures and even accumulating snow, sometimes all in the same day!

Regardless of the weather situation, knowing what to do and how to prepare your home for what is forecast can help you avoid serious property damage.

Getting Ready for the Incoming Weather

Depending on the type of storm, avoiding travel when the weather comes to town is always a good idea. If the temperature is hovering close to freezing and it is raining, it can quickly create slick roads and snow can make travel difficult or even impossible.

Stay home instead and fire up your weather radio to stay in the know. Start gathering your supplies so you can stay comfortable if the storm lasts for a while or knocks out power to your home.

Locate your extra flashlights and batteries, first-aid supplies, blankets and safe drinking water. You should also have an extra heating source in case the power is out for a while. Clean out your fireplace just in case.

While your home is usually the safest place to be during winter weather, it simply may become too cold to stay in if the power is out for multiple days. Have a backup location like a friend’s home or a warming center in mind that you can head to if needed.

Addressing Damage After the Storm

Use caution when you are walking around outside after a storm. Slick walkways and snow can cause many different dangerous conditions, so carry your phone and be careful.

If we do get any snow, brush it off of your roof and gutters right away. That snow can eventually melt, only to refreeze again at night, and that can lead to structural damage for your roof.

If the storm brought strong wind, check your roof and siding for impact damage as well as your vents. Wind can blow rain or sleet into your vents, which can freeze and cause ice blockages. Any blocked vents can cause dangerous carbon monoxide to build up in your home, so clear away these blockages quickly.

Our Storm Damage Restoration

If your home suffers any sort of home damage, give us a call right away. Our team can address water damage and structural issues quickly to help you avoid further damage and costly repairs. We will assess the situation, clean and sanitize and tackle repairs for you in a timely manner.

The winter season may be an unpredictable one, but we are always here to assist you. Contact us day or night for immediate, reliable restoration assistance.

Our team is always ready for anything! Contact us at SERVPRO of Allen for a quick restoration after suffering damage from a winter storm.

Recovery Tips After a Summer Storm | SERVPRO of Allen

9/18/2023 (Permalink)

Dramatic night shot of a home with visible roof damage from a recently storm and fallen debris Summer storms affecting your property? Call SERVPRO of Allen to restore your space in no time!

The summer season here in the Allen area can be tranquil and beautiful one minute and storming like crazy the next! Preparing for the possibility of severe weather is always helpful in avoiding significant damage, but sometimes storms can take us all by surprise.

Even just a few months ago, many of us were surprised by the hail storm that came through town! Even the best preparations sometimes don’t stand a chance against Mother Nature around here. In addition to hail, strong winds, floods and tornadoes can develop in a moment’s notice.

Keeping your family and pets safe during a weather emergency should always be your main goal, so stay inside and away from windows until the storm has passed on. Once it is gone, you can start investigating your property for any damage, then call SERVPRO® of Allen for a complete recovery.

Steps After the Storm Passes

Be extremely cautious about heading outside immediately after a storm passes your home. We all know that thunderstorms can come in waves, and another one may be on the horizon. Stay connected to your weather radio or tune into a local news station for updates.

If anyone in your household was not home when the storm came through, connect with them to ensure their safety and call your relatives or friends if they were in the path of the storm.

You should also take the time to check on your neighbors! Storms affect houses differently and can have very specific damage paths, so stop by to make sure everyone is OK. Just be cautious about going into any damaged rooms or spaces that seem unsafe.

Once everyone is safe and accounted for, head back home and start taking pictures of any damages you see. We will use those pictures to create your restoration plan, and we will also use them to communicate with your insurance company about your storm damage claim.

As Time Goes On

While you wait for us to arrive, you can survey the damage around your home and start collecting your possessions. Be careful while you move about. Hidden loose floorboards or bent nails could be lurking out of sight, or parts of your home that you can’t see could be structurally damaged. Walk cautiously and carry your phone with you in case you run into any trouble.

If your home has been significantly damaged and it is still raining or drizzling, cover your possessions with a tarp or board up your windows while you wait for us to arrive. We will do this extensively when we show up, but do what you can in the meantime.

Our team works directly with your insurance company to handle your entire restoration, so rest assured that everything will be done properly and in an efficient manner. We can also help you figure out lodging if your damage is extensive and you need to live off site for a few days while the repairs are taking place.

SERVPRO of Allen is dedicated to helping you however you need it during this process. We are here 247 to respond to your call, and we won’t stop cleaning, sanitizing and repairing for you until you are 100% satisfied with the final product.

If a storm leaves your home damaged, contact us for fast recovery. We’re here 247 when you need us.

When the Rain Comes Pouring In... | SERVPRO of Allen

9/18/2023 (Permalink)

image of a large body of water during a rain storm with ripples caused by the heavy downpour Water damage in your home? Not for long with SERVPRO of Allen on the case!

A soft and gentle rainfall in the late summer or early fall can be relaxing and much-needed at this time of year. Rain has a way of calming everything down and refreshing our community!

However, not all rain is light and idyllic. Sometimes it can wash over the area in intense waves, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and even hail. While our homes are strong enough to withstand moderate storm conditions, sometimes the rain can fall fast enough that our homes can’t keep up and the rain comes leaking into our homes.

Our SERVPRO® of Allen team wants you to stay as safe as possible during severe storm situations like this, so we offer some tips for taking quick action and seeking shelter below.

Hazards of Intense Rain

If rain falls hard and fast, it can cause all kinds of problems for our area. Flash flooding conditions can appear if rivers overflow or roads can’t drain fast enough, which can make travel impossible or treacherous.

It can also cause ground issues if the water is moving fast enough. Landslides can sweep away trees, plants, cars and even houses. Since we live in the aptly named “Flash Flood Alley,” we know how quickly rain can turn into a major issue. We could easily get three to six inches of rain in a short amount of time when the clouds open up.

While this act of Mother Nature is not preventable, preparing in advance can help you avoid certain situations and severe damage. Stay connected to local authorities, and take action immediately if a flash flood warning is issued or intense rainfall is expected.

Staying Safe

Preparing your home and family should always be your top priority. If you are out and about, head for your house right away and avoid any low-lying areas, drainage ditches or any roads that you know flood easily during storms. Get whatever you can into your house or garage that you don’t want swept away by the water, including your cars, lawn equipment and outdoor furniture.

Get anything fragile or sentimental off of the first level of your home and move it upstairs and consider shutting off the electricity for your lower level just in case the water starts to flow in. If that happens while you are home, stay calm and stay above the water line. Remain in a safe location until the water stops rushing in. Move carefully through your home and avoid walking through the water and call us for a complete restoration.

Future Prevention Strategies

We know that weather can be unpredictable, which is why it is impossible to plan for every scenario. After you have recovered from this particular flooding incident, consider taking measures to prevent this from happening again! Start with getting a professional opinion about your property and whether you would benefit from getting it professionally graded. This can help water flow down and away from your foundation, even if it becomes heavy at times.

Another helpful investment is a sump pump! If your home is in a low-lying area, having a sump pump is crucial during intense rain storms. Sump pumps work to remove water from around your foundation to keep it from leaking down your walls and ruining your walls, floors and ceilings.

Remember that we are always here if you need assistance recovering from water damage. Our SERVPRO water damage restoration specialists will help dry out the excess moisture, repair whatever was damaged and sanitize your space to prevent mold growth.

We are here for all of your water disasters. Contact us day or night for a quick recovery.

Tips for Enjoying Fall Bonfires, Safely | SERVPRO of Allen

9/18/2023 (Permalink)

campfire-style fire pit with flames emerging from the top of the logs on the dark green grass Bonfire season is upon us! SERVPRO of Allen has your back with these helpful fire safety tips.

What a crazy hot and humid summer we experienced! Now that we are into September, we are looking forward to the reprieve and we will happily welcome the cooler temperatures and changing seasons. The fall season is all about fall decorations, pumpkin spice and cozy outdoor bonfires.

Spending more time outside around a bonfire is a wonderful way to enjoy the changing seasons, but we can’t let our guard down when it comes to fire safety and the potential risk of starting a wildfire.

Our SERVPRO® of Allen team explains more about fall fire safety below so you can enjoy your s’mores, campfires stories and cozy evenings without worry.

Tips For Starting the Fire Safely

Do choose a safe location for your fire pit. Permanent pits cannot be moved, but you can still clear brush away and ensure your log pile is far from the ring. Portable pits should be set up on level ground that is far away from your house, shed and garage.

Do keep water close by for emergencies. Buckets of water or a garden hose that is turned on and ready to use are both reliable water sources that you can use in an instant if needed. If you are camping or in an area without easy access to water, ensure you have a shovel close by to extinguish the flames with dirt or sand.

Do pay attention to the weather and obey local burn bans. Windy days or lingering dry conditions can create dangerous fire situations quickly. Check with our local authorities before lighting your fire and choose another day for your plans if the conditions are less than ideal.

Tips for Controlling the Flames

Don’t use anything other than matches, lighters or tinder to maintain your fire. Gas and lighter fluid are extremely flammable, but are also extremely unpredictable. They can easily start your fire pit and surrounding grass on fire and lead to a serious situation in seconds.

Don’t let your kids or pets get too close to the fire pit, and certainly do not leave them unattended near it. Serious burns, injuries or accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.

Don’t let your fire get too large. It can be fun to feed the fire and watch the flames grow, but large fires can be harder to control and can be more unpredictable.

Don’t go inside or leave your home until you are 100% sure that your flames are out. Pour water over the entire area until the embers are extinguished and the logs are cold to the touch.

Reducing Wildfire Risk

We can all do our part to reduce the number of wildfires or fire damage in our community. While not all wildfires can be prevented, the vast majority of them are actually caused by humans. Be responsible with your flames, listen and obey all burning restrictions and never leave your pit unattended at any time.

Our team is here for you 247 to help you recover if you ever suffer fire damage at your home or property. Contact us right away for a complete restoration.

Fire can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Contact us day or night for immediate assistance.

Easy Storm-Proofing Steps for the Summer | SERVPRO of Allen

7/19/2023 (Permalink)

Empty parking lot with lots of greenery shown during a heavy downpour of rain. Have you been impacted by the unusual summer storm season? SERVPRO of Allen has your back when you experience flood and water damage.

Wind, hail, rain, tornadoes and floods…it’s summertime here in Allen! The threats associated with severe summer weather can pop up at any time, so everyone in our community needs to be prepared for this possibility.

Owning a home comes with many responsibilities. In addition to everyday maintenance and household chores, you also need to prepare for any upcoming or dangerous weather patterns.

Our community needs to be on the lookout for strong winds, hailstorms, heavy rain and the occasional tornado that passes through town.

The best way to avoid home damage during any of these scenarios is to prepare for it! Read our tips below so you can start prepping your yard and home ahead of the next storm.

General Yard Work

One of the nice things about storm preparation is that many of your yard work tasks are actually things you should be doing on a regular basis anyhow! By splitting up the tasks amongst your family, you can get a lot done in a shorter amount of time.

Strong winds and downpours are some of the most common causes of home damage. In order to avoid this, keep your trees trimmed, your gutters cleared and your property free of debris like fallen branches.

Whenever you are giving your home a visual inspection, pay special attention to your windows and doors. Check these areas for rotten wood or gaps along the frames and address those issues right away. You should also focus on your roof! Water can easily get up under broken shingles, so those should be repaired as soon as you notice them.

Additional Home Upgrades

Storm preparation doesn’t have to be expensive! Some of the best preventive steps you can take are cost-free. However, there are some additions you can make to your home that will take your protection to the next level.

Storm shutters are a reliable investment if your neighborhood frequently experiences strong winds. Triple-pane windows can also add a layer of protection against the blowing wind and flying debris. If your property has heavy tree coverage, investing in gutter guards can help reduce clogs and blockages.

If you have a shed or other outbuilding on your property, consider adding reinforcements or tie down the roof before a storm comes through to help keep it intact.

Once your home is ready, stay current on the weather forecasts and make sure your safe shelter location is ready to use at any time. Remember, SERVPRO of Allen is always here to put your home back together in the event of storm damage.

Steps to Protect Your Employees During Severe Weather Event | SERVPRO of Allen

7/14/2023 (Permalink)

Business man holding an umbrella and briefcase with a dark thunderstorm behind him. If your home or business was damaged in a storm, call SERVPRO of Allen to get you back in action.

Running a business is hard work at times! You are constantly being pulled in different directions while also trying to stay focused on the day-to-day operations and the eventual big picture.

While you are busy preparing and planning for the week and months ahead, don’t forget to have a plan for severe weather. Extreme weather situations have the potential to be catastrophic for your business as well as create unsafe conditions for your staff.

Your team relies on you to have a plan ready to use, so use our tips below to come up with a great plan that will keep everyone safe when the weather turns severe.

Knowing Our Risk

Weather threats look different all across the country, and they can even look different based on whatever season we are in! The threat of heavy rain, wind and particularly tornadoes are the main threats to us here in Allen. One tornado has the potential to cause complete devastation in a matter of minutes.

You should also understand the flood risk for your business location. This can help you prepare for the possibility of flooding and purchase flood insurance if necessary. Other methods like staying current on the weather patterns and understanding the weekly forecast can help you stay prepared.

Communicating Effectively

We are all connected in many ways through our computers, phones and the internet, so this step should be really easy! Be sure that you have your entire team’s contact information so that you can share updates about severe weather situations quickly.

If bad weather is in the forecast, you can send out your safe shelter location and explain how to access emergency supplies or how to evacuate in an emergency.

Getting Out Quickly

Your staff’s safety is your top priority during any severe weather emergency. Knowing how to quickly evacuate can help keep everyone safe. Explain the different evacuation routes and exit points throughout your building, and keep them all clearly labeled. Consider hanging your evacuation strategy near exits to help make this process go more smoothly in an actual emergency.

Evacuating might also be the worst option at the moment, depending on what is going on outside. To plan for this scenario, prep your safe shelter location now and store food, water and an emergency kit in it so that if your team has to hunker down, they can still be comfortable.

Practice going through these various scenarios a few different times, and always be sure that everyone understands their role during an emergency situation. This can help ensure everyone’s safety no matter the weather!

Don’t let extreme weather take control! If storms strike your business, SERVPRO® can help you restore your losses.

How to Approach Fire Safety With Your Children | SERVPRO of Allen

6/10/2023 (Permalink)

Young boy staring at a lit match being held between his fingers SERVPRO of Allen is here for you and your family if you experience a fire in your home or business.

Keeping your kids safe often feels like a full-time job! Many kids are naturally curious about the world, and it can be fun but also a delicate balance between teaching them about the realities of the world and scaring them with the facts.

Fire safety is a crucial lesson for your children, but even you know that fire can be scary—and you are an adult!

By slowly introducing fire safety concepts in a relaxed and encouraging environment, you can prepare your kids for the possibility of a house fire while also giving them the tools they need to stay safe.

<h3fire-safety-around-the-home">Introducing Fire Safety Around the Home

Kids often learn through hands-on experiences, but you certainly don’t want to just be starting fires all over your home. Start with the basics and explain the different areas of your home where fire is often used, like your stove, bonfire pit and your candles. Explain how it spreads and what it needs to grow, and discuss how quickly a single spark can lead to a big fire.

This is also the time to explain that adults are responsible for tools like matches and lighters. While these items are necessary to have around the home, they can be dangerous in the hands of a small child. Encourage them to leave these items alone and to tell an adult if a match or lighter is left around the house.

<h3and-listening-to-authority">Understanding and Listening to Authority

Many kids want to grow up and become a firefighter or police officer, but many of these kids are also shy around authority. This is especially true if the men and women they interact with are in their full uniforms and gear. Try to show your kids pictures, videos and books about firefighters so they understand what they look like when one of them comes into your home.

You should also try to attend a local meet-and-greet opportunity when you can! If your children can meet your local fire crew now, it increases their chances of responding appropriately in the event of a true emergency. It is also crucial that your kids feel comfortable calling out their names and crawling to safety. Practice this by making it a game! See who can yell the loudest from their rooms and army crawl to an exit the fastest.

<h3your-exit-strategy">Making Your Exit Strategy

Every home in the Allen area should have an emergency exit plan. If you haven’t done this yet, grab your kids and have some fun! Challenge them to find every way out of your room and write down their findings together onto a diagram of your house.

It is also important to have a safety conversation about the windows in your home. While using them as an exit can save lives, it can also be dangerous knowledge for a child. Be sure to explain that windows are used in an emergency situation only and should never be used for fun.

Once you have your plan finalized, put it all together! Practice a fire scenario at least twice a year and go all the way through from the initial fire escape to meeting outside on the safety of the lawn.

Fires can cause widespread damage. Call us for a thorough and efficient restoration.

Understanding Wind Damage in the Allen Area | SERVPRO of Allen

6/5/2023 (Permalink)

Dense forest area with trees bending due to intense wind and rain If you've suffered from storm-related damage to your home or business, make SERVPRO of Allen your first call.

Wind is an interesting weather phenomenon. Soft, gentle breezes on a warm summer day can feel like a gift, while strong winds during a severe storm can be scary and even dangerous.

Strong wind is often associated with severe weather, but it can also occur even when it is sunny outside. In any case, experiencing wind damage during either scenario can be frustrating and overwhelming to deal with.

<h3the-wind-blows">When the Wind Blows

Most reported damaging wind comes alongside thunderstorms, and even more so when tornadoes touch down. You should always obey weather warnings in these types of situations.

Thunderstorms can carry many different threats, including high wind speeds. Wind can easily reach 60 miles per hour and can knock around yard debris with ease.

Straight-line winds are a little more powerful than a regular wind gust. These winds don’t have any rotation in them, which leads to intense bursts of destruction. Straight-line winds can reach up to 100 miles per hour.

Winds associated with tornadoes can take on many forms, even multiple different kinds at once! Tornadoes can produce straight-line winds, downdrafts and micro or macrobursts that can cause complete devastation to your home and property.

Here in Allen, we need to be on the lookout for tornadoes as our risk for experiencing a few every year is very high. If you lived or worked in the Allen area in 2015, you remember how destructive that F4 tornado was, so it is important to take shelter during any tornado warning.

<h3home-damage-due-to-wind">Preventing Home Damage Due to Wind

Wind can cause a wide variety of home damage. It can topple trees, blow around yard debris and furniture and even damage power lines. If the wind blows hard enough, it can upend mobile homes and cars.

Staying safe during a wind advisory or warning involves being alerted to the changing weather patterns. If you have enough notice, go outside and secure any loose objects like your propane tanks, patio furniture and trash cans. Throughout the year, keep your trees trimmed and remove any fallen branches or limbs before a storm arrives.

When the wind starts to blow, head inside and avoid the windows. Strong winds can easily pick up yard debris and toss it into your glass. After the storm has passed, take a walk around your property to look for damages.

Damage may be obvious if something like a fallen tree lands on your roof, or a single shingle may be missing. Even one missing shingle can cause water issues throughout your home. If you do need help recovering from home damage, our SERVPRO of Allen restoration team is ready to help. Call us 247 for a quick recovery.

Water Damage Locations Around Your Home | SERVPRO® of Allen

5/9/2023 (Permalink)

img src =”bucket” alt = " blue bucket in the middle of the living area catching water falling from the ceiling ” > Think you may have water damage in your home? Here are some tips from SERVPRO of Allen to find the source.

Water damage can occur virtually anywhere in your home. Leaks, accidents or natural disasters have the ability to soak through walls and floors with ease. The unfortunate thing about water damage is that it often starts quietly and can cause widespread damage before it is even discovered.

In order to prevent these types of situations from occurring, it is important to understand the most common areas for water damage to occur in your Allen area home.

Check out our latest blog below so you can keep your home as dry and comfortable as possible.

Your roof. As our roofs protect us from the elements and help keep us warm, they can suffer wear and tear over the years. Small gaps or leaks can often lead to bigger problems, or a singular weather event could cause extensive damage to your roof.

Since we don’t often get up onto our roofs, these types of situations can go unnoticed and the water can continue to leak into our homes.

Once it starts to drip down your walls, it can seep into floors and can soak through your insulation. It can be hard to completely dry out the spaces behind your walls, which can lead to mold growth and eventually an infestation.

In your bathroom. No matter if you have a big family or you live alone, your bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your house. Since water is constantly running through the taps in this space, water damage is a constant threat.

The best way to catch any issues is to investigate signs right away. A dripping water line or a puddle under your sink should alert you to discover the cause. It is also important to help control the humidity and moisture levels in your bathroom.

Even though these tasks may seem obvious to do, they can go a long way to preventing troublesome water damage. Just be proactive and inspect your plumbing on the regular.

Other appliances. Another common location for water damage is anywhere near your appliances. Dishwashers, fridges with ice machines and washing machines all use water in order to function, so they could malfunction at any time. If you notice any new water spots or unexplained moisture near your appliances, check it out right away.

It might be harder to discover a water leak beneath or behind your appliances since they are so bulky and hard to move, but pull them away from the wall when you can to do a thorough check.

Another important homeowner tip that our SERVPRO of Allen team suggests is to replace outdated appliances regularly. Older or worn-out appliances have the ability to leak or malfunction more regularly than newer technology, so do your family a favor and keep only the best equipment in your home.

Dealing with a water emergency? Our SERVPRO specialists can be on the scene of the disaster ASAP to restore your water-damaged home!

Spring Is on the Way! Is Your Home Ready for the Rain? | SERVPRO® of Allen

3/24/2023 (Permalink)

img src =”sky” alt = "dark stormy clouds forming into a spring storm ” > SERVPRO of Allen team is always here for you, if you experience any storm damage call us right away.

Spring is coming fast, and we are definitely looking forward to the return of those warm Texas days that we love so much. While you are busy with your spring-cleaning and getting ready for a spring and summer of fun, it is important to get your house ready for the change in weather as well.

Spring brings warm temperatures, but it also brings back our heightened risk of storms, heavy rain and tornadoes.

We want to help you keep any rain out of your home and help protect your home against storm damage! Taking the time to prepare your home and address any issues or damage now can help keep you safe when the first spring storm comes to town.

Clean Up Your Property

The winter season brought all kinds of things to us this year! Severe storms, wind, rain and even that crazy ice storm made our winter season very memorable. Because of all of this weather, it is important that you check your gutters to remove blockages or debris buildup. If your gutter system can’t function normally, any rain we get will have nowhere to go and will pool on your roof and leak into your attic.

It is also important to clear off any vents that are on the outside of your property. Any sort of debris blockages can make it hard for your appliances and HVAC system to work properly, which can cause malfunctions and even be dangerous to your family’s health. Focus on areas like your furnace and dryer vents.

With the dip in temperatures that we saw in late January, it is possible that your outdoor water lines froze. If you have any leaks or visible cracks along your outdoor water lines or water faucets, address the issue right away and repair the crack to prevent a larger water disaster from occurring.

Fixing What You Find

Home maintenance can sometimes be forgotten or overlooked during the winter season. If you don’t spend as much time outside, it can be harder to notice damage if you aren’t looking for it! Now is a great time to inspect your your roof and siding to catch any issues before the first storm comes.

A single missing shingle or broken siding panel can introduce water into your walls that can spread quickly. The earlier you catch the damage, the greater chance you have of preventing a larger water leak or disaster.

Preparing for Storms

Now it’s time to turn your attention inside your home! If you have a sump pump, make sure that it is working or have a professional come out to do an annual inspection on it. When the first spring rain storm comes through, you want your sump pump to be in top working condition to avoid a flooded basement.

Update your storm safety plan, clear out your safe shelter location, and repack your emergency kit. If you had used anything in it over the winter season, it is important that you replace what you took out. Also, throw in a couple extra fresh batteries, just in case. Finally, make sure you have multiple reliable ways of receiving weather alerts and update any contact information for your family and friends.

If your home still suffers water or storm damage this spring, don’t hesitate to give us a call. The team at SERVPRO of Allen is trained to handle any sort of home damage that you have. We will work hard to help restore your home quickly so you can get back to your regular life fast.

Keep Water Damage Away From Your Commercial Property | SERVPRO® of Allen

3/24/2023 (Permalink)

img src =”mold” alt = "corner of interior wall showing signs of black mold from water damage” > Experienced water damage in your commercial building? SERVPRO of Allen can help you get dried out quickly.

Water is a common cause of commercial property damage. If you are a business owner, you know all too well what even a little water where it shouldn’t be could do to your property! Water damage can be costly to recover from, so it is important to investigate issues quickly to prevent a large-scale disaster.

The more you know about where common water issues begin, the better you can be at protecting your business and employees from an extended closure.

<h3common-areas-for-water-problems">Three Common Areas for Water Problems

You never want to close your business unnecessarily! Stay in control of your business operations by understanding the areas of your business that are prone to water damage. Have your maintenance crew check these spaces often to catch a problem as it emerges.

1. The roof. Roof leaks can happen slowly over time, or they can occur all at once due to something like a fallen tree or flying debris. If water gets into your attic, it can slowly leak down your walls and infiltrate your entire building. Have someone regularly get on your roof to look for damage, especially after a strong storm or windy day.

2. Bathrooms. Our toilets and sinks utilize water every day, so it is no surprise that a large amount of water troubles start here! In fact, commercial bathroom issues account for nearly 15% of water loss troubles in businesses across the country. If you have many bathrooms or a large building, have someone prioritize checking your pipes and fixtures at least once a month to catch any issues.

3. Water heaters/HVAC/boilers. Our utility rooms are responsible for all of the behind the scenes work for your business! These appliances keep your air comfortable and water warm, so taking care of them is crucial. If you notice any loose pipe fittings, clogged drains or mysterious puddles on the floor, investigate right away. A faulty appliance could lead to a widespread water disaster.

<h3steps-to-take">Action Steps to Take

Take matters into your own hands to stop these water disasters from occurring. Barring natural disaster or severe storms, many different water damage scenarios are actually preventable if you prioritize routine maintenance and inspections.

The first thing you should do is create a maintenance plan that outlines all of the work that needs to be done in your building. This can ensure every pipe and plumbing system is maintained and fixed as needed.

Another great way to support your business is to create an Emergency Ready Plan with your friends at SERVPRO of Allen! We can help create an outline for what to do following a disaster, making the whole concept feel a little less overwhelming.

We know you care about your business, and we do, too! In addition to being proactive and understanding what areas of your building to prioritize, know that we are always here for you. If you suffer a water disaster or even just a small amount of damage, our team will be there right away to help you fully recover.

Protect Your Home From Fire This Season | SERVPRO® of Allen

11/11/2022 (Permalink)

< img src =”tree.jpg” alt = "a small Christmas tree in front of a burning fireplace " > Should a fire issue pop-up during this holiday season, SERVPRO of Allen will be on call ready to assist.

The holiday season is here! Cozy homes full of glowing lights, fresh pies and cookies, and our closest friends and family make this time of year so wonderful. Unfortunately, though, the coziness of this season actually leads to more home fires than any other time of year.

While you are busy writing out your letter to Santa or prepping for your first-ever Turkey Trot, it is important to remember proper safety practices when decorating and celebrating around the Allen area.

Fire risk is all around us during this wonderful time of year, so staying safe should be in the forefront of your mind as you plan for the holidays ahead.

Seasonal Hazards to Watch For

House fires due to decoration accidents are actually quite common. In fact, about 790 structural fires each year are due to decoration mishaps. Don’t let your beautiful home fall victim to a preventable accident!

If you hang stockings or garland, be careful to avoid any source of heat like space heaters or fireplaces. The consistent heat and flame can start a fire or melt your decorations.

If a real tree is your family tradition, have a responsible person in your home water it daily and sweep or vacuum up any dead needles on the ground around it. Your tree’s lights and other lighted decorations should also be unplugged each night before you head to bed.

Steps to Take

While classic decorations like hanging your stockings over the chimney are common and super cozy, they can actually be a fire hazard if you are not cautious. Try not to let them hang too close to the flames or choose a spot nearby instead.

Also be careful about your candle use! Candles start about 20 home fires every day in the United States, so it is especially important to only burn a candle while you are home and in the room. They should also only be lit in an area out of reach of children and pets.

Outdoor lights and decorations are also a great way to celebrate the holiday season! However, before you set up anything outside, make sure it is tagged for outdoor use and can withstand the elements. Don’t pierce any cords while hanging up your decorations, and avoid hanging anything right over a brush pile or wood.

Once you are finished decorating safely, make sure that your smoke detectors have fresh batteries and are working properly! Review your safety plan with your family and make sure your children know how to get out of your home quickly.

Finally, keep us in mind if you do end up suffering fire damage. Your SERVPRO of Allen team is ready to help should you need us this holiday season.

Do You Have a Storm Safety Plan? | SERVPRO® of Allen

5/20/2022 (Permalink)

a dark cloudy sky with lighting strikes off in the distance If you discover storm damage to your home or business, reach out to SERVPRO of Allen Heights right away.

The spring and summer seasons bring warm and sunny skies, but they also bring thunderstorms and severe weather! Seasonal thunderstorms can quickly turn severe when the unstable air produces heavy rain, damaging winds and tornadoes.

Plus, considering that there are around 100,000 thunderstorms throughout the United States every year, these severe weather events happen often in northern Texas, especially when we have one of the highest rates of confirmed tornadoes in the country.

We are off to a quick start this season so far in north Texas in terms of severe weather. We have had 17 reported tornadoes so far this year when our average for a typical storm season is 23. With the way that this storm season has begun here in Allen, being prepared will only help keep your family safe.

While we know that we cannot dictate the weather, we can do our best to be prepared for it when it occurs. By doing small things like building an emergency kit, developing a communications strategy and having a plan for how to deal with post-storm damages, you can be prepared to conquer severe weather and reduce the impact it can have on your home.

Your Severe Weather Communication Strategy

The first thing you need to do when bad weather is in the forecast is to come up with a communication plan with your household members. You also need to be able to receive communications and instructions from your local news and authorities.

It is important to know the difference between watches and warnings so you can understand when to stay vigilant and when to move inside and locate your safe area.

You must also have a reliable way to ** receive alerts** from officials, such as your cell phone or an NOAA weather radio.

Finally, having a storm strategy for your household is incredibly important in order to keep your family safe. Have a safe area in your home that everyone is aware of and is instructed to get to in the event of bad weather, and have a way to communicate with family members that are not home when the storm rolls through. That way everyone knows when and how to check in and mark themselves as safe, regardless of where they are.

Packing Your Severe Weather Emergency Kit

Your emergency kit should be packed with the basics that your family members need to comfortably live for at least 72 hours of sheltering in your safe area. That should include non-perishable food, water, flashlights and extra batteries, and a full first-aid kit. This kit should always be stocked and ready to use in your designated safe area location.

Your “After the Storm” Checklist

After the storm has passed, you should always do a recap of your safety plan and then check your property for storm damage. Once it is safe to do so, check your property for damage.

Make sure that your roof, doors and windows are your priority after any storm, as these areas are the ones that are susceptible to water damage most easily.

If you do find damage in your home, know that SERVPRO of Allen will be there to fix your problem. We provide quick responses from our trained technicians, and we have a passion for what we do.

When the storm is over and your household members have all been marked as safe, you should do one final audit of your safety plan. Gather feedback about what worked and what needed improvement, and make any necessary adjustments so that you are ready and more prepared for the next storm.

If you discover storm damage to your home or business, you can count on SERVPRO to handle the restoration. We’re here 247 to spring into action—get in touch with us today.

Spring Showers and Other Weather Hazards | SERVPRO® of Allen

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

"an image with a cloudy, rainy, sunny and snowy sky" Extreme temperature changes can lead to the possibility of severe weather. SERVPRO of Allen is a click away if you experience any damage.

We live in the one of the largest nations in the world. When you have such a large area, “seasonal weather” can mean a multitude of things. With everything so spread out, it means that certain areas of the country experience different weather patterns, as well as different weather threats.

With spring upon us, it’s safe to assume that warm and air will collide and can cause weather events all throughout the nation. That’s why you must stay prepared, and keep in mind the particular type of weather we experience here in Allen.

Take the Pacific Northwest, for example—it is prone to heavy rain over the spring months. This can cause flooding and water damage issues for area residents. The higher elevations will still be dealing with snow, which means that the snow melting and runoff can cause problems of its own.

When you think of the Upper Midwest and Northeast regions, you know it’s still quite cold there. People who live anywhere from Maine to North or South Dakota will expect cold weather to the point that they could still be dealing with snowstorms and blizzards! It’s as if their spring season doesn’t start until early summer.

Unlike the previously mentioned regions, the southern West Coast will already have to be on the lookout for excessive heat waves. These heat waves can be incredibly dangerous to the lives and safety of residents.

From where we are located, Texas, all the way to Iowa, residents will need to watch out for windstorms, derechos and the risk of wildfires. These can easily be spread by winds and dry season. This part of the country is also known as Tornado Alley, which is where tornadoes are particularly common.

Then you have the Southeast region, which will experience a wide range of severe weather. People in this area are likely to see everything from tornadoes and severe thunderstorms to dangerous rip currents or early-season hurricanes.

As you can tell, it doesn’t matter what part of the country you live in, hazardous weather is a real threat to every portion. While you may be experiencing a lovely spring afternoon, with the right amount of wind, your neighbor one state over could be experiencing the blizzard of a lifetime. That’s why you need to stay prepared and ready, because Mother Nature can’t be controlled.

If extreme weather leaves you with damage from water, fire or other elements, help is a click away. Contact SERVPRO for fast, expert recovery.

Where You Can Prevent Water Damage at Home | SERVPRO® of Allen

11/3/2021 (Permalink)

a leak in ceiling creating water lines running down an interior wall A water leak can turn into a big problem. Contact the SERVPRO of Allen team if you are dealing with any water damage.

Water damage usually sneaks up on you. We rarely get advanced notice of leaks, drips or flows. Once they happen, it’s too late, since the damage is already done.

The good news is that a little proactive maintenance can help you spot leaks before they start. Here are a few of the most common places for leaks:

Sinks and faucets. These fixtures are used multiple times a day, and over time, they can become fragile and wear out. The supply lines are under pressure, so if there is a problem, it usually sprays a stream of water and is easy to find. Drain system problems will show up as more of a small leak or seepage.

Refrigerators. Today’s modern refrigerators often have automated ice machines, which require a water source. Also, most refrigerators have a defrost cycle that happens at least once a day. You may have even heard a sizzling noise coming from your refrigerator. That’s the sound of the defrosted water hitting the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil usually dissipates the water before it hits the drip pan, a safety area that accumulates defrosted water droplets. But an improperly working defrost system can cause a water leak.

Clogged gutters. Are your gutters properly maintained? Gutters full of debris are one of the leading causes of roof damage. Overflowing gutters can cause soffit damage, and water can seep into the interior of the house from walls or around the foundation. Gutters should be inspected and cleared of debris as necessary.

Roof damage. Falling limbs can cause serious roof damage. If a limb perforates the roof membrane, it will turn into a costly repair. Many times, damaged roofs allow water to seep in, causing mold and rot to take hold. That’s why it’s important to inspect attics and roofs for damage.

Old copper pipes. If your house was built between 1950 and 2000, there is a good chance you have copper piping. House remodels are the perfect time to inspect and replace plumbing if necessary. Today, older copper plumbing supply lines are being replaced with PEX. PEX is made of cross-linked polyethylene and has great durability and strength.

Clogged sink drains. Many items can clog a drain in a sink. These drains can become clogged with food, grease or hair. Be careful if you decide to plunge instead of calling a plumber, since plunging creates significant pressure on the drain system. While most of the time it can push a clog through, sometimes you could damage a pipe connection and spring a leak.

Make sure to take care of the systems in your home that create a comfortable living space for you. Occasionally inspect and repair any issues you find with gutters, roof systems, supply lines or drains. This can potentially save you a lot of time and money!

If a water leak erupts into a big problem at home, you’ve got the best team in the business on your side. Contact SERVPRO today so we can get started.

Fall Brings Football & New Fire Dangers | SERVPRO® of Allen

9/16/2021 (Permalink)

a small campfire burning bright in the dark night Be mindful about fall fire safety. Always remember that SERVPRO of Allen is the trusted leader in the restoration industry.

When fall hits, it’s football time in Texas. Along with football, comes tailgating, cooking…and additional fire dangers.

While it might not be cool yet here in the heart of Texas, cooler weather brings some unique fire risks. It’s worth taking the time now to learn how to protect yourself and your property.

Outdoor Fires

People like to spend more time outside in the fall after the oppressive heat of summer begins to fade. Favorite outdoor activities often involve hanging around a fire, whether it’s the grill or a fire pit.

Grilling and tailgating go together, so let’s discuss them both. The single largest cause of fire with grills involves excessive grease buildup. Regular cleaning of the grill will easily prevent fires from excessive grease.

Campfires and fire pits should also be a source of concern. Knowing where and how to build a campfire is as important as knowing how to put it out.

Use a match or lighter to set fire to dry leaves or twigs, then add dry wood and bigger sticks. Never use an accelerant like kerosene or lighter fluid.

Fires should be far away from buildings and other flammable objects. Make sure to extinguish your firecompletely before leaving your campsite or fire pit. Slowly douse it with a bucket of water and make sure no embers remain—anything you leave behind can start up again with the right breeze.

Burning Leaves

After a long, hot Allen summer, many homeowners look forward to cleaning their yards in the fall. This includes raking, and some will burn their leaves and other yard debris.

Open burning is legal in Allen but don’t forget about the “open burning rules” in Texas.

Space Heaters

Portable space heaters are one of the most frequent causes of home fires in fall and winter. While there may be no need for a heater yet here due to the outdoor temperatures, it’s worth mentioning in case ice-cold AC in the office has you reaching for a space heater.

Keep your heater away from anything flammable. Ensure it’s on a stable level surface and not near where any children may want to play. If possible, don’t use extension cords with heaters; plug them straight into the wall.

Halloween

We’ll talk more about this later, but costumes and decorations can be fire hazards, and all these things are ubiquitous during the Halloween season, so be attentive and responsible as you celebrate.

If a fire hazard should turn from potential to reality in your home, remember the trusted leader in the recovery industry and contact SERVPRO to get your property fully restored right down to the smell of smoke.

Where You Can Prevent Water Damage at Home | SERVPRO® of Allen

9/12/2021 (Permalink)

water draining down wall, a leak in ceiling creating water lines running down an interior wall A water leak of any size can turn into a big problem. The team at SERVPRO of Allen is here 24/7 to help with any size water damage.

Tips for Sheltering Anywhere During a Sudden Summer Storm | SERVPRO® of Allen

8/17/2021 (Permalink)

lighting striking hillside during storm at night Have you been affected by a storm event? SERVPRO of Allen is available 24/7 and ready to assist you with any storm damage.

When you are making the most of your fun in the sun during the summer, you may not even consider the possibility of a sudden storm when the skies are clear. Unfortunately, storms are something you should always be conscious of, especially when the heat and the humidity are high—these create perfect fuel for storms, so they can start in an instant and leave people unprepared.

Be sure you know what to do no matter where a storm catches you with these tips.

Know What to Do No Matter Where a Storm Catches You

Know your options for shelter. When you hear that a storm is a possibility and you are somewhere you can wait out the threat, this would be the ideal thing to do. That being said, when storms come up suddenly, this will not always be an option. You can set up shelter in your vehicle with the proper guidelines in mind, enabling you to wait out the storm anywhere you are.

Practice electrical safety. If there is a thunderstorm in the area, that means that lightning strikes are a possibility as well. Many times, lightning will strike from cloud to cloud instead of from cloud to ground, but it is important to practice electrical safety in any building just in case. Unplug everything around you if you can, and consider installing surge protectors at home and at the office for a solid solution that lasts.

Avoid direct contact with concrete. Though concrete provides a sturdy structure in which to seek shelter, it is also vital that you understand the risk of shock it presents. As most concrete is poured around metal bracers, if lightning strikes the building, the metal can become charged and dissipate this electricity through the concrete. This can cause shock to anyone directly touching the concrete, so it is wise to be aware of.

Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes. When a storm interrupts your otherwise peaceful day spent outdoors, getting back to what you were doing quickly is likely top priority. It is important to wait enough time before heading back outside, however—lightning can travel more than 20 miles, so waiting at least half an hour after the last thunderclap is advised.

If your home sustains damage due to a storm, you can count on us to help. Contact us at any hour to learn more about our storm restoration process.

Your Fire Safety Checklist for Warmer Weather | SERVPRO® of Allen

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

flames and smoke from a bonfire Restoring fire and smoke damage is one of our specialties. Contact SERVPRO of Allen to learn more.

As popular as New Year’s Day is, many people look forward to spring as the start of something truly new.

The weather feels nice again, the outdoors seems more inviting and new life is springing up everywhere. Something about it just feels right, doesn’t it?

Spring also beckons us to barbecue. We’ll use any old reason to break out the smoker or grill—graduation parties, family cookouts or high school reunions. But this also leads to an increase in accidental fires.

In fact, spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of year. But don’t worry; we’ve got the safety tips that will keep you on the path to a safe, enjoyable season around the house.

The grill. Grills are a common culprit for springtime fires, which is why they are often the first thing we think about for fire safety. The basics of safety: Make sure your grill is stable and in good working order, keep it cleaned between uses (almost 20% of grill fires are due to poor cleaning), use only recommended accelerants and fuels, and keep it at least three feet from the house (and 10 from any brush or leaves).

The fire pit. Picture yourself hanging out with good friends, and you may also envision a fire pit. Fire pits add a cozy glow to a cooling spring or summer night, but it’s important to operate them safely. Keep a bucket of water nearby—use it to slowly cool the fire to cold embers once the night is through, or as an emergency snuffer. Keep kids away from any fires unattended. And don’t use leaves or pine needles to stoke the fire, as they may create runaway embers.

Chimneys and dryer vents. Your chimney can get a backup or buildup of ash, and spring is at least a pleasant time to do the unpleasant job of cleaning it out so that next fall you’re not lighting fires in a clogged chimney. As for the dryer, use this season change to check all its connections, hoses and vent pipes for built-up lint.

Your local SERVPRO technicians are on hand 247 for emergencies. If you encounter fire damage at your home or business, no matter the cause, we will be there faster and have it cleaned up sooner. Call or click today and experience the SERVPRO difference.

Why SERVPRO®? Our Tech Is Tops. | SERVPRO® of Allen

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

storm debris stilling on curb outside of red brick home near me At SERVPRO of Allen, our cleaning and restoration services are powered by advanced technology. Contact us today to learn more.

When you picture after-storm clean-up, something like this might come to mind: a mop and a bucket. A big dumpster full of torn-out drywall. A bunch of fans pointing at a wet carpet.

Those may all be part of the picture, but they’re only a part. At SERVPRO, our cleaning and restoration services are powered by advanced technology.

Let’s Talk Water

When it comes to water removal, SERVPRO uses several technologies to detect and extract water, then dry the remaining structures and their contents.

Moisture Meters. At SERVPRO, we deploy moisture-detection devices to “see” moisture that may be hiding in the wall, under the floor or elsewhere. A hygrometer can detect humidity in a room, leading us to make a deeper investigation. Infrared devices point our technicians toward problem areas using the principle that wet materials tend to be cooler than dry ones.

Drying Out. For removing water, SERVPRO uses a variety of drying-out equipment, including industrial-grade fans and dehumidifiers. The speedy air movement handily removes moisture from the air and pulls it from substances, protecting them before they’re overly damaged.

Clean Chemistry

When it comes to removing odors—and the microbes and other substances that cause them—SERVPRO again invests in technology that’s proven effective.

First, machines remove airborne contaminants such as mold spores or particulate matter from smoke. Next, we apply OSHA-approved products to destroy germs and contaminants. Our products are EPA-certified against harmful bacteria, fungi, molds and—most recently—COVID-19.

New advances are constantly being made in restoration technology. At SERVPRO, we invest in keeping up with the trends. But even though we use the latest cleaning technology, we do stick with one old-fashioned principle: When we restore and clean your home or business, we keep your health and satisfaction front of mind.

From emergency cleaning and restoration to routine disinfection, we’re there for you. Contact us at any hour for assistance.

Stay Safe During Storms | SERVPRO® of Allen

12/10/2020 (Permalink)

dark storm clouds forming in sky If your home is damaged due to a storm, SERVPRO of Allen is here to help. We will get the job done right, contact us today.

Here in Allen, we almost never have to shovel out from a winter storm. In fact, a snowy day comes as a rare pleasure most winters.

Still, weather this time of year poses challenges to people, pets and property. Let’s talk about keeping yourself, your loved ones and your home safe during storms—now and all year around.

Tornadoes

Yes, we can still have a tornado this time of year! To protect yourself and your loved ones during a tornado, look to this guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Long-Term Planning

Establish a way to get information if power and internet are down, such as a battery-operated radio. Identify safe places to shelter in your home, or places to stay if your home is unsafe. And always have water, medications and non-perishable food on hand if the storm limits travel for a while.

Make sure your plan includes people with special needs, as well as family animals.

During Stormy Weather

Avoid travel, except to get to safety. Check the weather forecast frequently for storm watches or warnings. Also, know the signs of tornado:

  • Clouds may appear low in the sky.
  • Hail may fall.
  • Sky may look black or green.
  • You may hear a roaring noise.

If the Tornado Hits

Now it’s time to find shelter. The best place to stay is underground (as in a basement) or in a central part of a dwelling. A cubby under a central staircase is a good bet.

Bolster up. For added protection, you can pull a mattress around your shelter area or also get under a sturdy table.

Avoid glass. Keep out of rooms with glass windows, if possible.

Never, never shelter in a trailer. If you live in a mobile home, have a plan to find alternative shelter in place and make use of that plan at the first sign of a storm—well before a tornado hits. For instance, you could have a standing plan to stay with a relative when the NOAA has issued tornado warnings.

If a storm damages your home, we’re there for you. Contact us at any hour for assistance.

Did you know? Up to 75% of small businesses lack a disaster recovery plan, according to a survey by Nationwide Insurance. That means it will take those businesses longer to get back on their feet after a flood, fire, tornado or other disaster.

However, careful planning can help companies stay up and running through a disaster, or open their doors quickly after one. The Insurance Information Institute has a series of “must-dos” for small businesses. Let’s look at some of the highlights:

Make a Plan

To have a plan, you have to, well, make a plan. What do you, your managers and your employees need to do in time of disaster? Have a clear marching order in terms of who does what and who calls whom. Your plan should prioritize preservation of life, then preservation of business assets, such as facilities, inventory and intellectual property.

Who You Gonna Call?

Key to your plan is a list of resources to call on. You’ll need to alert a chain of command within your business. Plus, you’ll need to have contact information for outside resources, such as your insurer and commercial cleaning partner. You’ll also need to be able to contact your vendors and suppliers. And you’ll need to communicate with customers about changes or interruptions to your business process. All that contact information should be accessible from outside of your place of work, such as on a cloud server.

Consult With the Experts

SERVPRO® has more than 40 years of experience in disaster mitigation for business clients. We can work with you before disaster strikes to help you understand how damage from a storm, fire or other natural disaster can affect your business. That way, when disaster happens, you’ll have a list of what to do and who to call. At a time when time is of essence, you’ll be able to take decisive action to get back in business again.

How to Avoid Furnace Fires | SERVPRO® of Allen

9/25/2020 (Permalink)

a person in a blue shirt reaching up to change a furnace filter If you experience any property damage due to a fire, we are here to help. Contact SERVPRO of Allen to learn more.

Wow! This summer has definitely been a warm one. But with fall upon us, we may be thinking about cranking up our furnaces again. Waking up with toasty toes rather than a freezing nose has its temptations.

About 62 million houses in the U.S. use natural gas furnaces for heat. Other houses use wood furnaces, and a proud few still burn coal. These suggestions focus on gas furnaces, but it’s important to perform preventive maintenance on any type of furnace.

Clean-Up Time

Clean around the furnace. Do a quick clean-up, making sure no insulation, paper, boxes or anything else is stored within three feet of the furnace.

Clean the furnace itself. Dirt can cause motor overheating, and it can prevent you from seeing problems with wiring or other issues.

Look at Your Air Filter

Is your air filter clean? Dirty air filters can reduce air flow and lead to overheating, increasing the chances of fire.

Check Chimney Flues and Outside Vents

Check for buildup inside the vents, as well as outside obstructions such as birds’ nests.

Is Your Smoke Alarm Working?

It’s a good time to check both your smoke and CO alarms. If you don’t have them—get them.

For Some Things, You Need a Professional

Every year, it’s a good idea to have your furnace serviced by a professional. They can check for items such as a cracked heat exchanger, incorrect pressure in the furnace and even flame color, which can indicate how well your furnace is functioning. If you haven’t had your furnace serviced lately, this is a good time to make an appointment.

If your home has suffered fire damage, SERVPRO of Allen can help. Our agents are on call around the clock so we can start helping you get back to normal, fast. Contact us at any hour for assistance.

Planning and Executing Workplace Fire Evacuation Drills | SERVPRO® of Allen

8/31/2020 (Permalink)

red fire alarm hanging on gray concrete wall If your business experiences any fire damage, you can count on us. SERVPRO of Allen specializes in fire restoration.

Understanding your business’ risk levels from a market perspective is key, but it is important to also understand the risk levels you face from disasters and emergencies. Fires at businesses occur every year, and for those who do not focus on lessening their impact, they can be devastating.

While there are many elements to fire safety in the workplace, we highly encourage businesses to start with what will keep their staff as safe as possible by creating a system for evacuation drills. These drills will not take up much time and will help your staff know exactly what to do if the fire alarm sounds.

Create a System for Evacuation Drills at Your Business

Consult with your local fire officials. There are many online resources available for business owners to do their research regarding fire safety, but do not forget about community resources as well. The local fire squad will likely be able to schedule a visit and provide you with valuable counsel regarding the best evacuation routes to set up based on the specifics of your building.

Communicate and mark fire evacuation routes. After you have decided what evacuation routes suit your needs, be sure they are labeled clearly and your staff is aware of the upcoming drill. Keeping everyone looped in will create more transparency and be sure every one of your staff members are prepared when the drill begins.

Have fire drills frequently. While it is possible to have drills too frequently, we generally find that the problem is not scheduling them often enough to make an impact. You should have them with enough regularity that they are fresh in everyone’s mind, so that even if a fire does start unexpectedly, everyone remembers exactly what the protocol is.

Run different fire scenarios. Fires can start and spread in a multitude of ways, especially in a commercial or office space. Keep your drills dynamic by taking this into account—have the drill begin in different spots around the office, so your staff can become accustomed to using different exits with little notice just as they would need to in a real fire.

If your business has experienced fire damage, you can count on us. We specialize in commercial fire restoration and will be here for you at any hour—contact us today.

Destructive Storms Roll Through

6/9/2019 (Permalink)

Heavy rain, hail, lightning, and strong straight line winds can come when severe weather strikes. Let SERVPRO of Allen help you pick up the pieces.

While thunderstorm season is technically over, it never really is in Texas, is it?

Storms have been rolling across our state, dropping large amounts of rain, hail, bringing high speed straight line winds, lightning strikes, and leaving destruction of varying sorts in their wake.

SERVPRO of Allen is committed to be HERO Ready in emergencies, coordinating efforts to keep our crews equipped with supplies and energy in order to push relentlessly through the wreckage caused by storms.

Roofs, siding, windows, and brick effacements are only some of the external components of a home or commercial building that can suffer damage during a severe thunderstorm. Secondary to that is the water damage caused by leaks and flooding, or even mold damage.

SERVPRO of Allen is able to immediately respond to your call for aid, to move pertinent contents, and begin cleaning up the interior damage. Within 24 hours, progress can be well on the way to bringing down humidity levels, and demo can begin in order to prevent growth and expedite drying.

Two Types of Smoke

Two Types of Smoke?

Did you know that there are two types of smoke? Well, there are!

The two types are wet and dry smoke:

Wet smoke comes from plastic and rubber, usually low heat, with a strong odor, and is sticky and smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean than with dry smoke.

Dry smoke is usually fast burning, with high temperatures; the heat rises, which means the smoke does too!

These sorts of distinctions are only some of the reasons that you should choose SERVPRO of Allen to respond when you encounter fire or smoke damage in your home or business. Our history serving folks in the Allen area, regardless of the type of damage sustained, is a strong indication that you can trust us to care for you in your time of need. Give us a call, and let us help you with your fire or smoke damage!

Soot and Smoke Damage

6/6/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot can permeate into unseen areas of your home. Let SERVPRO of Allen help.

Smoke and soot are very invasive, and can cover even non-visible surfaces within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. SERVPRO of Allen's smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action to remove it and restore your home.

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Allen will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pre-testing.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We are equipped to restore your fire and smoke damage, will treat your family with empathy and respect, and your property with care.

Fire Damage - What to do Until Help Arrives

5/14/2019 (Permalink)

When your home or business suffers a fire loss, here are some things to do and things to avoid

Things to Do:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely, and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim, and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks, and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
  • Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

Things Not to Do:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of Allen.
  • Don't attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO of Allen.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat, or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat, or water (they may be contaminated).
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Don't send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.
